All Snails Matter, No Matter How Small

Although they are some of the tiniest creatures on earth, they are important to the planet’s eco-system. “Snails are looked at as underdogs of the animal kingdom. They eat low on the food web, gleaning calcium and other vital nutrients from decaying vegetation, fungi, and even directly from the soil,” Coppolino explains. “They in turn pass the nutrients up to other animals on higher levels of the food web by becoming prey for them.” Wild turkeys and songbirds like the wood thrush and the robin eat snails, using the calcium in the snails to create strong-shelled eggs that will survive to hatching. “There are certain species of fireflies that will only eat certain species of snails,” says Coppolino. “If you love fireflies, you ought to love the snail.” Marla Coppolino is currently working on a soon-to-be- announced publishing project, along with the debut of the 2020 snail calendar on her site. She continues to discover new ways to bring the snail to the forefront and make others aware of its importance.
